Description

The Old Rectory Cottage, likely built in the 18th century, was renovated around 1980. It is constructed from granite stone rubble, with a granite stack and a thatched roof, while the outshot has a tiled roof. The cottage features a two-room plan and faces west, although its left end wall is more prominent from the village center. An axial stack between the two rooms serves the larger left room. The building is two storeys high and has 20th-century service outshots at the rear.

The exterior includes a recessed doorway at the right end of the front, which has a 19th-century plank door with a side light. To the left, there is a 20th-century casement window with glazing bars, and another similar window above in a late 19th-century gabled half dormer with a tiled roof. The roof is hipped. The left end features a 16-pane sash window to the right of a blocked doorway, along with another casement window with glazing bars above.

Inside, the cottage has plain carpentry details that are exposed, along with a rebuilt granite ashlar fireplace. The roof space was not inspected, but the bases of roughly-finished A-frame truss principals are visible on the first floor. Extending east from the left end wall is a high granite rubble wall that shields the 20th-century rear outshots and garden from the village. This cottage is part of a group with other listed buildings that contribute to the attractive center of Throwleigh village.
