Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory, now divided into flats, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of snecked granite ashlar, featuring many large blocks, particularly in the quoins and around the openings. The building has granite stacks with granite ashlar chimney shafts and a thatched roof, although the rear has been replaced with corrugated iron.

The house has a double depth plan set back from the road and facing north, with a front and rear room on either side of a central entrance hall and staircase. The principal rooms are located at the front, while the service rooms are at the rear. The left (eastern) rooms are served by a gable-end stack, and the right rooms have an axial stack that backs onto the entrance hall and staircase. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported that it was rearranged in the 20th century when the house was subdivided into flats.

Originally, the exterior featured a symmetrical three-window front with 16-pane sash windows surrounding a central doorway that contained a part-glazed six-panel door with panelled reveals and a plain doorcase. Currently, the left ground floor window has been blocked, and a small 20th-century casement window with glazing bars has been inserted at the right end. The roof is hipped to the right and gable-ended to the left. The left end wall has only two ground floor windows, both with pointed heads and Y-tracery glazing bars. The rear windows, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, are mostly casements with glazing bars.

The Old Rectory is part of a group of attractive listed buildings that form the centre of Throwleigh village.
