Description
The Village Cross in Throwleigh was erected in 1897 and incorporates a socket stone that likely dates back to the 15th century. Made of granite, the cross is located at the center of the village crossroads. The cross itself is probably from the 19th century and features a low, plain design with chamfered edges, standing approximately 1 meter high. It is set in a late medieval socket stone that has spurred corners. The cross is elevated on a three-step plinth that is square in shape and constructed from roughly-dressed granite blocks. The risers of the plinth are inscribed with rustic capitals, commemorating the erection of the cross in 1897 to mark the 60th year of Queen Victoria's reign. The cross is part of a group of listed buildings in Throwleigh village.
