Description
This is a bank barn located approximately 4 metres west of Higher Stiniel, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed from granite rubble with large dressed granite quoins and features a thatched roof. The barn is set into the hillside above Higher Stiniel. The ground floor serves as a stable facing east, while the first floor is a barn facing west. The stable front includes a doorway with a low segmental head on the right and a slit window on the left, along with two small unglazed windows above for the barn. There is another similar doorway at the northern end of the stable. The barn has a loading doorway on the western side and ventilator slits at each end. The roof is half-hipped at both ends. Inside, the barn features plain carpentry details, including a 5-bay roof supported by A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. This barn is well preserved and is notable for being thatched, which is unusual for agricultural buildings. Additionally, Stiniel is a particularly picturesque hamlet in Dartmoor, and the barn is part of a group that includes three important listed farmhouses: Higher Stiniel, Stinhall, and Stinhall Cottage.
