Description

East Bowden, also known as Higher Halstock, is an unoccupied farmhouse that likely dates from the early 18th century, although it may have earlier origins. The building features plastered stone rubble walls and a gable-ended corrugated iron roof. It has an axial granite ashlar stack with a tapering cap.

The layout resembles that of a traditional longhouse, with a shippon (a cow shed) at the left end that has no internal access to the adjoining hall/kitchen. Beyond the hall/kitchen is a small, unheated parlour or dairy located at the right end. A 19th-century outshot has been added at the rear of the shippon, and a 20th-century lean-to has been constructed at the front of the parlour or dairy. There is a direct entry into the central hall/kitchen, which is heated by an axial fireplace.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with two windows, which are early 20th-century two-light casements. The shippon on the left has a doorway to its right and a loft opening on the first floor to the left. There is also a 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed addition at the front of the right-hand end of the house, which features a plank door. At the rear, there is a 19th-century outbuilding extension behind the shippon.

Inside, the roof structure is likely from the 18th century, featuring straight principals with lapped and pegged collars reinforced with nails. The principal room contains a fairly rough granite flamed fireplace with a lightly chamfered lintel. This farmhouse represents an interesting 18th-century continuation and adaptation of a very traditional Dartmoor plan form and is situated in an isolated setting on high moorland.
