Description
The spring head at SX 620 935 is a structure that likely has medieval or earlier origins. It is constructed from undressed granite blocks and is set into the hillside. The spring head is enclosed on three sides, covered by a large slab, and is open on the north-east side. A natural spring continues to flow from this site.
There is limited historical information about this spring head. Its rough construction makes it challenging to date accurately. However, a track leading to and from the spring is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1885, indicating that it was in use at that time.
This spring head structure is designated at Grade II for several key reasons: it retains original fabric that may date back to medieval times, it is located at the boundary between a domestic settlement and a large area of open grazing, it is associated with various interesting listed and unlisted buildings and structures, and it contributes visually to the surrounding landscape.
