Description

Gidleigh Mill is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, although its layout may indicate earlier origins. It is constructed of granite stone rubble, with the front plastered, and features granite stacks topped with 19th-century brick. The thatched roof adds to its character.

The house has a three-room-and-through-passage plan, built across a hillside and facing south-south-east. The rear wall is exposed and does not show any signs of a rear passage doorway. Both ends of the house have gable-end stacks, with the left stack featuring a winder stair that rises alongside to the front. The central room has an axial stack that backs onto the passage, while the left room is believed to have served as the kitchen. The building is two storeys high.

The exterior displays irregular front fenestration, with four first-floor windows (including a fifth at the left end for the stairs) and two ground-floor casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, featuring glazing bars, with the oldest having vertical iron glazing bars. The front doorway is slightly off-centre and currently contains a 20th-century door. The roof is gable-ended. The rear wall shows a slight change in axis near the centre but lacks a definite change in masonry, and it also has very low windows, which are again from the 19th century.

The interior has undergone a superficial modernization in the 19th century, but plain carpentry details are visible where exposed. The roof has not been inspected.
