Description

The churchyard cross, located approximately 30 metres east of the Church of St. Michael in Chagford, serves as both a churchyard cross and a war memorial. It was erected in 1928 using fragments from what are likely 15th-century crosses. Made of granite, the cross stands about 3.8 metres high and features a tall shaft with short, stumpy arms that are crudely carved. On the west side, at the junction of the arms, there is a cross inscribed. While the head of the cross is medieval, the shaft is 20th century but finished in a similar style. The socket stone, which is also medieval, is octagonal, approximately 400mm high, and has moulded sides. The cross is set on a two-step plinth, with the lower step being higher and featuring a soffit-moulded tread and a chamfered plinth. The sides of the steps bear inscriptions memorializing those who died in both world wars.

The medieval cross head was previously built into a wall near Holystreet Manor and is said to have originally stood in the Market Square. The socket stone was sourced from the yard of Southmead House. Both elements are medieval, but E. N. Masson-Phillips notes their differing characteristics, indicating they were not originally parts of the same medieval cross.
