Description

A pair of cottages, originally a single house, dates to the 17th century, and was likely divided into two cottages during the 19th century. The building is constructed of granite stone rubble with shaped quoins and a corrugated iron roof (formerly thatched). The original design featured a two-room plan, built across a hillside, with a central lobby entrance. The original staircase was likely in a turret that projects from the right front end. In the 19th century, the house was divided into two one-room plan cottages, with a new staircase added to the left room. The right side may have been converted to store rooms at some point. The cottages are now unoccupied and the first floors serve as haylofts, accessed from a rear terrace.

The front elevation now has only one window, an unglazed and shuttered opening on the ground floor to the left. Original features include a front door, blocked windows, and a blocked doorway with a blocked first-floor window above. A small blocked window is present in the stair turret. The roof is gable-ended. A 19th-century doorway with a plank door and a 17th-century oak two-light window with a chamfered mullion are on the right end wall. The rear wall has been rebuilt in the 20th century, with doorways providing access from the rear terrace.

The interior contains plain carpentry. Both ground floor rooms have roughly-finished crossbeams and granite fireplaces with soffit-chamfered oak lintels. The right-hand fireplace includes a side oven. The roof in the right room is a 20th-century replacement. The building is notable as a small cottage associated with Langston Farmhouse and contributes to a group of picturesque buildings, including Langston Farmhouse (south).
