Description
This stable, located approximately 1.5 metres west of Stinhall Cottage, is likely from the 17th century and was reroofed in the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed of granite rubble and has a thatched roof. The building has a single-room plan and faces south, situated uphill from Stinhall Cottage. It appears to have originally had a large disused stack at the left (west) end. Currently, it functions as a stable with a hayloft above. The front features a central 20th-century two-flap stable door with a contemporary hayloft door directly above it, and there is a small slit window to the right of the door. The masonry could not be closely examined to determine the original arrangement of doorways and windows. The roof is hipped at both ends.
Inside, the hayloft floor is entirely 20th-century, made up of a series of unfinished poles. The roof structure consists of late 18th to early 19th century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. It is suspected that the left (western) end once contained a large fireplace, which has no lintel and is now an alcove. The front end of this wall protrudes and contains two blocked oven-like doorways, suggesting that this building may have served as a detached bakehouse. This stable, which is an unusual example of an agricultural building still featuring thatch, contributes to the picturesque character of the Dartmoor hamlet of Stiniel, and is part of a group of listed buildings that includes three significant farmhouses: Higher Stiniel, Stinhall, and Stinhall Cottage.
