Description
This is a partially-ruined longhouse located approximately 70 meters northeast of Babeny Farmhouse, dating from the early to mid-16th century. The structure features granite rubble walls and has a gable-ended corrugated iron roof over the shippon and passage, while the house end is roofless. The layout includes a shippon on the left, with a passage, hall, and likely an inner room to the right. In front of the shippon is a lean-to that was probably originally a pigsty. Adjacent to the passage is a stone rubble porch with stone seats inside.
The right-hand wall of the passage, now the gable end, contains a large unchamfered granite-framed fireplace with a massive lintel and a stone oven on the left side. The rear wall of the hall remains up to head height and features some blocked window openings along with a larger, unclear opening at ground level. The lower gable end wall of the shippon includes large granite blocks and has a central drainage hole with a small opening above it. The rear wall of the shippon has a central inserted doorway flanked by two slits. Inside, the passage has a solid wall to the shippon with an original wooden shouldered-head doorframe. Babeny is noted as one of the 17 Ancient Tenements of the Forest of Dartmoor and is first mentioned in a document from 1260.
