Description
Riddon Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the late 20th century. It has granite rubble walls that are partly rendered and features a gable-ended slate roof, with corrugated sheeting covering the shippon. The building has two rubble stacks: one axial stack located in the right-hand range and one lateral stack at the rear of the left-hand part.
The original right-hand range has a simple longhouse plan, with a hall at the higher end heated by the axial stack, and a passage and shippon to its right. The passage has been absorbed into the shippon, which remains unconverted for domestic use. In the 17th century, a separate building was erected nearby to accommodate more living space, likely for different family members or generations. This new building was heated by a rear lateral stack and was probably originally designed with a two-room plan. In the late 20th century, significant modernization occurred, including the construction of a linking section that connects the two buildings.
The farmhouse is now L-shaped and stands two storeys tall. The original longhouse projects forward on the right, and its house part now adjoins the 17th-century section. An outshut, likely used as a pigsty, has been built against the inner face of the original longhouse. At the higher end, this outshut forms a porch for the door located at the right end of the 17th-century range. The front of this range features four windows with 20th-century casements, including two-light and three-light designs, and a part-glazed door to the right. Most early interior features are concealed, except for some chamfered beams in the 17th-century range. The building was completely reroofed in the late 20th century.
