Description
Steps Bridge is a road bridge over the River Teign, built in 1816 by Edward Taylor of Exeter and George Weatherdon of Newton Bushel. It is constructed from granite ashlar and features three spans with parapets, shallow segmental arches, cutwaters on the middle piers, and pilasters on the outer piers. The arches spring from vertical piers with plain imposts that continue as a string course around the keeled domed cutwaters of the middle piers and the outer pier pilasters. Above the cutwaters are pilasters, and below the parapets is a platband that has neat granite caps. The bridge has a slight curve at either end, terminating in pilasters that rise above the level of the parapet and are capped separately. According to a 1952 description, the bridge is a 19th-century restoration of a 16th-century structure.
