Description

This barn, located approximately 9 metres south of Chapple Farmhouse, dates from the 17th century, with possible elements from the 16th century, and includes a 19th-century horse engine house. The barn is constructed from large blocks of coursed granite ashlar on the eastern and northern sides, while the other sides are made of granite stone rubble. It has a corrugated iron roof, which was originally thatch.

The barn is designed as a threshing barn built down the hillslope, facing east towards the road. It features opposing doorways to the threshing floor, positioned slightly uphill of the centre. The main front doorway is full height and contains large 19th-century double plank doors, with the left door split into flaps. There is also a smaller rear door with a 19th-century plank door. To the left of the front door, there is a loading hatch.

High in the uphill (northern) gable end, there is a window that contains the head of a 16th-century oak round-headed doorframe with a chamfered surround. The stone rubble blocking and the ashlar surround indicate that this was originally a doorway, and the doorframe fits remarkably well, suggesting it has always been in this location, which may push the barn's date back to the 16th century.

At the downhill end of the rear, a horse engine house was added in the 19th century. Its roof and heavy beams are supported by a series of granite posts, although no machinery remains inside. The main roof of the barn is gable-ended, and the interior is open to the roof, featuring a series of 17th-century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. This barn is an attractive and unusually complete example of a Dartmoor threshing barn and is part of a group of listed buildings that make up the hamlet of Chapple, which includes Chapple Farmhouse and West Chapple.
