Description
The Saxon Well, located about 25 metres west of the vicarage gate on the opposite side of the road in Widecombe-in-the-Moor, is a well head that likely dates from the 17th century or earlier. It is constructed from granite ashlar and is a small structure measuring approximately 1.5 metres square and 1.5 metres high. The roof is made up of a series of granite lintels that project at each end and are chamfered. On top of these lintels rest two large granite slabs that create a pitched roof, with a triangular stone placed at the apex to form a ridge. The front features a small opening with a 20th-century plank door that has ornamental iron hinges. Below this opening are two small holes that once contained outlet pipes discharging into a sunken trough.
