Description
This is a disused cottage dating to the late 16th and early 17th century, situated approximately 3 metres east of Chapple Farmhouse. Constructed from coursed blocks of granite ashlar, with some granite stone rubble patching, it features a disused granite stack and a corrugated iron roof. Originally built down a hillslope, the cottage had a two-room plan, but the internal division was removed in the 20th century. Previously, the larger, right-hand (southern) room contained a gable-end stack with remains of an original newel stair to the left, which has since been replaced by an external stone stair on the front. The cottage is two storeys high, with a flight of external steps leading to a first-floor doorway near the right end and timber casement windows with glazing bars on each floor, all of late 19th to early 20th century date. The downhill gable end is blind except for the doorway to the main room on the left, and an old millstone is used as a step. A doorway and blocked window are found in the rear wall of the unheated room. The interior is largely preserved in its late 16th and early 17th century form, featuring a crossbeam with a soffit-chamfered finish and step stops, mirroring the finish of the oak lintel over the granite fireplace. Remains of the original stone newel stairs are present. The ground floor partition has been removed and the first floor is now supported by a 20th century beam. Above, the roof retains extensive remains of the original two-bay structure, carried on a true cruck truss with an unusually narrow collar, the apex of which has been altered and the ridge replaced. It includes a single set of threaded purlins, and remains of a hip cruck are visible in the northern end wall. This cottage forms part of an attractive group of listed buildings, contributing to the hamlet of Chapple, alongside Chapple Farmhouse and West Chapple, and their associated farm buildings.
