Description
This is a barn located south of Phelps's Farmhouse, likely built in the 18th century. It features a timber frame set on a tall brick plinth, with the lower panels filled with brick nogging and the upper panels covered in weatherboarding. The roof is made of clay plain tiles and has gabled ends.
The barn has a three-bay layout, with a central threshing bay that includes opposing cart entrances. The southwest front has a central cart entrance with double doors made of planks. At the rear, the central doors have been removed, and a large 20th-century shed has been constructed against the barn. A 19th-century cattle shelter at the northwest end and the cart-shed and stables at the southeast end are not included in this listing.
Inside, the three-bay frame is largely intact. It features jowled wall-posts that support tie-beams and collar queen-post trusses with struts. There are trenched through-purlins, later common rafters, and a ridgeboard. The wall framing is complete, with posts and rails, and long straight tension braces in each end wall. The lower panels have brick nogging, while the upper panels are weatherboarded.
