Description

Abbots House is a house in a row that includes a former shop front, dating from the 17th century or earlier. The ground floor is smoothly rendered, while the upper part is rough-cast, featuring scalloped pargetting edges around the windows and gables. The building has a stone slate roof, although some tiles are present at the back. It has two gables facing the street, and the upper storey was once jettied, but the lower walls have been brought forward. At the back, there are two parallel ranges with brick stacks. The house is two storeys high and has a two-windowed facade with oriels that have 'Tudor' heads over the lights and small stone slate canopies above the canted bay. The ground floor on the left has sashes with glazing bars, while the right side features a large casement with bars and a glazed 20th-century door, which was formerly a shop front. To the left, there is a six-panel flush door with a transom light and margin bars. A moulded bressummer spans two-thirds of the width of the front, and a carved angel serves as a corbel beneath the right oriel. Inside, there is heavy framing in what was once the back wall, and the front wall is also framed above the ground floor. The roof retains many original timbers, including one wind brace. The name "Abbots House" is believed to be linked to the nearby George Inn, which served as a pilgrims' hostel for visitors to the Abbey.
