Description
There are six monuments located in the churchyard of the Church of St George, positioned 6 to 10 metres south of the chancel. This group includes four headstones, one pedestal tomb, and one chest tomb.
The row of four headstones is made of limestone. The headstones closest to the chancel have no legible inscriptions but feature finely carved cartouche-like surrounds in bold relief. One headstone on the right has a raised inscription panel with a partially legible inscription, adorned with ribbon ties at the corners and a scallop shell flanked by scrolls at the top. Another headstone to the right also has a raised inscription panel with a partially legible inscription and a cherub's head at the center top, surrounded by foliate fruit and flowers that extend down either side of the inscription panel.
The pedestal tomb is made of sandstone and bears an inscription to Henry Yates of Abbotswood, who died in 1771, on the east side, and an inscription to his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1792, on the west side. It features a moulded plinth with inset corners and sunken oval inscription panels. The south side has an eroded burning grail, while the north side displays an urn shaded by a palm. The tomb is capped with inset corners and an inner pyramidal capping topped with a pineapple finial.
The chest tomb, dating from the mid-18th century, is made of limestone and has lyre-shaped ends. It lacks a legible inscription but has an oval inscription panel on the south side with a cartouche-like surround, marginal panels decorated with floral motifs, and single cherub's heads at the bottom of each side. The sides of the lyre-shaped ends are adorned with foliate decoration. There is an oval inscription panel with a partially legible inscription and a raised moulded surround with scrolls on either side. The east end features a rectangular inscription panel with a bolection moulded surround and scrolls on either side. The north side of the tomb is flat but likely resembles the south side. It has a thick capping with a moulded margin.
