Description

This is a mid-17th century house, now used as a store and stable, located approximately 4 metres north-east of Well Close Farmhouse. The building has a red tile roof and an 'L' shaped plan, with a basement underneath the house. The original ashlar stonework has been rebuilt in places using rubble, with some areas of coursed and dressed limestone. The entrance front features twin gables. On the basement level, a three-light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casement is visible, alongside a four-light stone-mullioned casement, originally with a continuous dripmould and ovolo-moulded mullions and transom, now blocked. Above are two-light and three-light stone-mullioned casements, also with chamfered detailing. A set of eight stone steps lead to a 20th-century plank door set within an ovolo-moulded surround, topped with a cambered lintel containing ventilation holes shaped like a four-petal flower. A moulded hood extends over the doorway. To the right of the doorway is a tall opening, likely used for stabling, now blocked with planking. The left gable end includes a two-light casement, a plank door, and a four-light casement with leaded panes and a continuous dripmould. The rear wall has a large blocked opening, a projecting stack with stone corbels at the base, and a small lean-to projection. The stable section projects forwards to the left, with a doorway, a pitching window, and a small plank door on its east-facing wall. The gables feature stepped coping with roll-cross saddles. A limited inspection of the interior revealed a small Tudor-arched fireplace, original beams, and roof trusses. The house’s external appearance, with ashlar stonework, contrasts with its relatively small size, containing only a single room on each floor.
