Description

The Lodge is a Grade II listed building located at the entrance to the drive leading to Middle Stanley Farm. It was built in 1904 and is attributed to Reginald Hart Prance, likely designed by Ernest Newton. The structure is made of random squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof and features coursed squared and dressed limestone stacks.

The Lodge has a rectangular plan with a cross range and includes a wash-house that is connected to the main building via a gate. It stands at one and a half storeys tall. The entrance front has a gable with a five-light stone-mullioned bow window, which displays the inscription "ORA * ET * LABORA" (pray and work) in large, finely executed lettering around its upper part. Above the bow window is a three-light stone-mullioned window, and the Prance family crest featuring a lion and fleur de lys is positioned above it. To the left of the gable, there is a plank door, along with single and two-light stone-mullioned casements. A two-light dormer with a leaded flat roof is also present.

The north-facing front, which faces the road, has two three-light stone-mullioned casements. The west-facing gable end features a two-light stone-mullioned casement at the first floor level, with a finely carved datestone above it. The gate connecting the house to the wash-house has a curving upper rail, and there is a single-light casement on the gable end of the wash-house. All windows are fitted with leaded panes. The building has axial and off-the-ridge stacks, and the gable ends have flat coping that curves at the apex and eaves. The wash-house has a hipped roof. The craftsmanship involved in the construction of this building, particularly in the roof, is of exceptionally high quality. An engraving of The Lodge can be found on a brass monument in the Chapel at Stanley Pontlarge. The interior has not been inspected.
