Description

Three Lane monuments are located in the churchyard adjoining the north wall of the Church of St Catherine. This group consists of three headstones belonging to the Lane family, dating from 1745 and two from around 1800.

The first headstone, positioned against the church, commemorates W. Lane, who died in 1745. It features a triangular shape with a sunk oval that displays three winged cherub's heads and sunlight, all set within a pediment that has a sagging base and is supported by Corinthian columns. The design is executed in very low relief and includes good lettering.

Adjacent to the north is a very wide headstone for W. Lane, who died in 1799, and his wife, who died in 1800. This headstone has a swept top with scalloped corners and showcases three winged cherub's heads among clouds, along with a dove. It is adorned with urns in the corners, scrolls and foliage on each side, and panels divided by a curious column, all in very low relief.

To the left is the headstone of William Lane, who died in 1808. This stone has a curved top with scrolls at the foot and features angels on the left and center. The design includes a representation of time on the right and a serpent of eternity in the top corners, with ribbons, hanging sheaves, and sickles down the sides.

There is a paved section behind the monuments over the burials, which includes footstones. This collection of headstones forms an interesting family group that relates to the wall monument on the north wall of the church.
