Description
TOLSEY HALL is an early 19th-century auction rooms, originally built as a Methodist Chapel. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork with a tile roof. It is a square room with a hipped roof, which originally had a gallery across the street side, although this has now been removed. The facade has three windows, each with a 12-pane sash window (four panes wide) featuring radial bars, set in painted reveals with stone sills. The ground-floor unit has a wide box surround and the upper sash functions as a fanlight to a pair of six-panel doors, with a deep fascia band above. Stone foot-scraper recesses are located on either side of the doors. Further blank arched recesses are positioned close to the corners of the facade. The rear wall features three arched sash windows at the first floor, matching those at the front, and has been broken through to provide access to a storage space. Inside, a balcony is supported by two slender cast-iron columns and accessed via a timber spiral staircase leading to a raking floor; the balcony front features scrolled cast-iron infill. The flat ceiling has a simple cornice and a large central plaster rosette, along with two ventilators. Dado panelling is also present. Although interior fittings have been removed, the building retains its essential fabric and detail, reflecting its original features.
