Description

This is a house dating back to the 16th century, with a substantial 20th-century extension at the right. It is located at the end of a row of properties. The original section is constructed with small timber framing, brick infill, and an underbuild, all beneath a tile roof. A brick stack is positioned towards the back on the left. The plan consists of two rooms running parallel, with a large gabled wing added to the right. The house is two storeys high with an attic. A 17th-century gabled dormer window is visible towards the left end, featuring a three-light casement with ovolo-mould mullions and a transom, plus square leaded panes. There is a three-light casement with wood mullions and leading on the first floor, and another similar three-light window at eaves with cast-iron diamond casements to wood mullions, above a matching ground floor window. A 20th-century plank door is on the left, sheltered by a deep fascia board with a drip mould; the fascia previously accommodated a large garage door. The right gable displays close stud framing in two tiers to the gable, with two tension braces at first-floor level. Within the alleyway, remnants of a heavy timber corner post remain. The interior has been altered, remodelled, and extended in the late 20th century. Notable features include an open first floor supported by a central collar truss with late 16th-century collar truss queen posts and diagonal braces between collar and purlins. A higher queen post truss is set against the left-hand square-framed gable, which has corner jowl posts. A mezzanine on the left is supported by a 19th-century cast-iron column. Original 17th-century first-floor and dormer windows retain wrought-iron turn buckles and draw handles.
