Description
The Henry Aisgil monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary, approximately 4.5 metres east of the chancel. It dates from 1622 and is made of limestone. The sides of the tomb are divided into three panels, with a raised inscription plaque on the central panel. The inscription reads in Latin: "HIC / IACIT SEPULTUS VENERABILIS / VIR HENRICUS AISGIL ECCLESIA CATHE / DRALIS MENEVENSIS CHANCELLARIUS / GLOUCESTERIENSIS PREBENDARIUS NEC / NON HUIUS PAROCHII VICARIUS / QUI OBIIT IN DOMINO / ANNO DONI 1622," and is surrounded by raised scrollwork. The panels on either side feature raised heraldic shields, each set within a blind round-headed arch with imposts and fluted pilasters on either side. There is also an inscription on the north side in Latin, but it is in smaller and almost illegible lettering. At either end of the tomb, there are small projecting pedestals that extend from sunken mushroom-shaped panels; these pedestals may have once supported carved skulls. The tomb is capped with a moulded margin.
