STOKE ORCHARD TREDINGTON Unidentified monument in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, circa 2.5 metres south of the porch
GV II* Unidentified chest tomb. Late C17-early C18. Limestone with an oval brass plaque on the south side with a rhyming verse in italics 'TO THE READER / If teares of Friends may be a Pollincture / To make my dust to after times endure / Or Hearts of Men are Tombs, and a good name / Make's Epitaphs and Pyramids of Fame / What mean's this Pile. It stands if Thou maist see / Time's hand now Jogs ye Glasse that runs for thee /. Perfect thy loose Accounts and Coppy mine / Thy few surviving dayes soe shall me Joyne / In triumph over Death and Time and bee / Most happy Comforts of Eternite / H. Vale'. Raised margin around plaque with bellflower decoration and winged cherub's head at top with swags either side. Stylized skulls in low engaged plinths either side of the inscription. South side matches the north side but has lost its brass plaque. Lyre-shaped ends with foliate decoration on the sides. Hour glass, skull and winged cherub's head at west end. Oval plaque with a raised margin and bellflower decoration at east end. Thick moulded capping with dentil decoration.
