Description
This is an unidentified chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, approximately 2.5 metres south of the porch. The tomb dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century and is made of limestone.
On the south side, there is an oval brass plaque featuring a rhyming verse in italics that reflects on mortality and the legacy of the deceased. The plaque is surrounded by a raised margin adorned with bellflower decoration and a winged cherub's head at the top, flanked by swags. There are stylized skulls set in low engaged plinths on either side of the inscription. The south side of the tomb mirrors the north side but has lost its brass plaque.
The ends of the tomb are lyre-shaped, with foliate decoration on the sides. The west end features an hourglass, a skull, and another winged cherub's head. The east end has an oval plaque with a raised margin and bellflower decoration. The tomb is capped with a thick moulding that includes dentil decoration.
