Description

The garden gate to the road at the Old Rectory, located opposite the drive to the church, along with the adjoining walls, was built between 1851 and 1852 by H. Woodyer for T. Gambier-Parry. It features a squared, coursed lias wall with ashlar copings and dressings. The gate has a corbelled roof above it and steps behind, with a wall running along the road on each side. There is a boarded door leading to the road, with wrought-iron hinges and a moulded stone arch above, supported by plain jambs that are battered at the foot. On either side of the door, there are long, shaped stone corbels with a marked projection that carry the wallplate, and a short central corbel above the door. The tiled roof above has a stone projection in the center over the door. The coping of the wall slopes down on each side of the gate; on the left, it continues level for about 26 meters, while on the right, it extends about 25 meters with four sloping steps leading to the coping. Internally, there is a short space followed by stone steps that go up to the left between retaining walls, with winders at the bottom. This structure was built as a pedestrian route to the church and forms a group with the Rectory, the school, and Church Lodge.
