Description

The stables and coach house at the Old Rectory were built in 1852 by H. Woodyer for T. Gambier-Parry. The structure is made of squared, coursed lias with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof, with concrete tiles on the rear slope. It consists of five bays and is one room deep with a loft. On the right side, there is a single window with a stone surround and a 20th-century iron frame inside. The building has two cambered arches supported by a circular column in the center, with matching responds. The recess behind the arches is paved with stone setts, and there are boarded doors on each return and the right end of the rear wall, all featuring rounded jambs. To the left of the rear wall, there is a three-light window, and to the left of the arches, a two-light window is present, along with double boarded doors at eaves level. The wall continues on the left as a buttress to the gable. A dated cast-iron rain-water head is also visible. Above, there is a large, weatherboarded gable in the center with a cambered doorway, although the door has been missing since 1986. A weathervane sits at the apex of the gable, and there is a wooden ridge ventilator to the right. Inside, there is a loose box on the right and a three-stall stable in the center, featuring a stone-sett floor, troughs, partitions, and iron corner hay racks, the last of which has a boarded chute from the floor above, making it an unusual survival. To the left, there is a harness room and coach house. This building forms a group with the Old Rectory.
