Description

BUCKLAND BUCKLAND VILLAGE SP 03 NE 2/14 Gloucester and Sperry monuments, in the churchyard, about 4m south of west bay of south aisle, Church of St Michael GV II Chest tombs. Possibly late C17; 1810. Stone. Elder, to Thomas Gloucester, alias Warkinan; weathered lid, moulded edge, plain sides framed rib at ends. East end, semi-circular headed recess, impost blocks, keystone, sunk spandrels, leaf decoration each side. Within recess cherub's head, palm fronds and crossed bones. West end obscured by ivy: probably paired arches with carved decoration in head. Later inscriptions; 1674/6 dates on north side. To south short chest tomb, to Elizabeth, wife of Thomas Sperry. Flat lid, moulded edge, slightly indented at corner on long sides. Sides, raised moulding, scalloped corners with paterae, swelling centre. Ends wide pilaster, eared rectangular panel on stem with raised moulding, gadrooning below: fluted returns to sides. Moulded base. Other inscriptions.
