Description

The Gloucester and Sperry monuments are chest tombs located in the churchyard, about 4 meters south of the west bay of the south aisle of the Church of St Michael. They are possibly from the late 17th century, with a date of 1810. The tomb for Thomas Gloucester, also known as Warkinan, features a weathered lid with a moulded edge and plain sides, framed ribs at the ends. The east end has a semi-circular headed recess with impost blocks, a keystone, sunk spandrels, and leaf decoration on each side. Inside the recess is a cherub's head, along with palm fronds and crossed bones. The west end is obscured by ivy but likely has paired arches with carved decoration in the head. There are later inscriptions, with dates from 1674 and 1676 on the north side. The shorter chest tomb for Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Sperry, has a flat lid with a moulded edge and slight indentations at the corners on the long sides. Its sides feature raised moulding, scalloped corners with paterae, and a swelling center. The ends have wide pilasters and an eared rectangular panel on the stem with raised moulding and gadrooning below, along with fluted returns to the sides and a moulded base. Other inscriptions are also present.
