Description

Hardwicke House is a detached farmhouse dating from the late 16th to mid-17th century, with later additions from the late 18th to early 19th century. The original square-panelled timber-framed section is now pebble-dashed, while the later sections are constructed of painted red brick. The building features a red tile roof and brick stacks on both ranges. The 16th to 17th century range has a rectangular plan and is two storeys high, with early 20th century two-light casements, some of which have horizontal glazing bars. The 18th to 19th century range is also two storeys with an attic and includes a 1½ storey store to the right. The entrance front has two windows with 4-pane sashes and a 19th century panelled front door, which has a glazed upper half. There are two Diocletian windows at the right gable end that light the attic, and the store at the right gable end has double doors within a small double-width entrance. A small diamond-shaped air vent is located to the right of the doorway, and there is a plank door to the loft in the right gable end. To the right, there is an open-fronted 6-bay shelter-shed that connects the store to a small two-storey stable block, which has two stable doors on the ground floor and a pitching window on the first floor. Inside the 16th to 17th century range, there is a cross passage, intersecting beams with deep flat chamfers, and an open fire with a bressumer beam.
