Description
The Iron Bridge is a road bridge over the River Mill Avon in Tewkesbury, dated 1822 on plaques located on each side. It is constructed of cast iron and sandstone, featuring a single segmental arch supported by five ribs, with openwork spandrels designed with linked circles that rest on sandstone abutments. The roadway has a slight rise at the center and is enclosed by a simple railing with small square balusters, approximately 1.6 meters high. The standards of the railing are topped with urn finials and a central decorative panel that bears a circular plaque inscribed "THIS BRIDGE WAS ERECTED IN THE YEAR 1822," beneath a relief modelled urn. The balustrade is supported by a heavy cast-iron cambered structural beam above the ribs and returns at the abutments. To the west, the bridge has three bays above ramped coursed stone retaining walls with heavy square sandstone coping for about 6 meters, while to the east, a similar structure extends approximately 19 meters to a set of waterside steps. The bridge features an asphalted roadway and has been extended to the south with an additional width on a separate structure. This elegantly designed bridge remains heavily used by traffic to Borough Mills.
