Description

A pair of houses dating from the 18th century, situated in a row on the north side of Gloucester Street, Winchcombe. The houses are constructed with Flemish bond brickwork featuring fine white joints, set over a 4-course cut limestone plinth which extends to number 73. A moulded stone eaves cornice is present, reducing in depth at the ends, and the roof is covered in stone slates with gable stacks positioned beyond the ridge. Each house has two storeys plus an attic and basement, and originally contained a single window each. The attic features small 2-light casement dormers, with one window of mid-20th century replacement. Broad 20-pane sashes are found at the first floor level, while 3-light sashes with glazing bars (remaining on the left side) are present at ground floor level. These four windows are grouped centrally with splayed stone lintels featuring projecting, dropped, fluted keystones with cappings. Plain openings with iron grilles are set within the plinths of each dwelling. Number 75 has a 4-panel door from the 19th century, approached by five steps, while number 77 has a 3-panel part-glazed door, also dating from the 19th century, within a broad frame and accessed by four steps. The buildings are noted for their handsome appearance, contrasting with more modest local vernacular architecture.
