Description
The Teddington Hands Sign Post is a Grade II listed structure dated 1676, which has been relocated from its original position nearby. It is made of sandstone and limestone, featuring a square limestone base and an octagonal sandstone shaft that stands approximately 3 meters tall.
On the south side of the shaft, there is an inscription that reads: "EDMOND ATTWOOD THE VINE TREE / AT THE FIRST TIME ERECTED ME / AND FREELY HE DID THIS BESTOW / STRANGE TRAVELLERS THE WAY TO SHEW / SIX GENERATIONS PAST AND GONE / REPAIRED BY THOMAS ATTWOOD OF TEDDINGTON AUGUST 10th 1676." This inscription is located towards the top of the octagonal column.
Above this, there is a circular stone with a brass plaque that bears the same inscription. The signpost features six painted iron hands indicating distances to various locations: Cheltenham 7 miles, Winchcombe 6 miles, Shrewsbury 16½ miles, Evesham 8½ miles, Overbury 2 miles, Pershore 7 miles, and Tewkesbury 4½ miles. The structure is topped with an octagonal pyramidal capping stone and a ball finial.
