Description
The William Tyler monument is a large headstone located in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, positioned south of the nave. It commemorates William Tyler, a Yeoman who died in 1812, and another William Tyler who died in 1818. The monument is signed at the base by 'HOLDER. Tewks'. It features paired segmental-headed inscription panels and a circular roundel at the top that depicts two angels holding a crown and palm fronds. On either side of the roundel are trumpets and burning torches, along with oval roundels containing sheaves of wheat. The headstone is adorned with reeded marginal decoration and orb finials. This monument is a rare and skillfully executed work by a local craftsman.
