Description
The John Attwood monument is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, approximately 5 metres north of the chancel. This large headstone commemorates John Attwood, who died in 1830, and his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1826. It is likely the work of Holder of Tewkesbury, known for the William Tyler monument. The monument features a circular roundel at the top with two angels holding a crown and palm fronds. There is foliate scrollwork on either side, along with small roundels that contain baskets of wheat in the upper right and left corners. The headstone is framed by reeded marginal panels with orb finials. This monument is a rare example of a skillfully decorated headstone that remains in good condition.
