Description
The Welling monument is a chest tomb located approximately 13 meters north of the northeast corner of the Abbey porch in Tewkesbury. It commemorates Henry Welling, who died in 1770, along with others. The tomb is made of sandstone and features a flat ledger slab with moulded edges and raised panels on the long sides. The ends have floral drops set into them, and there is a moulded frieze and base, all resting on a moulded base. The inscriptions also mention Harriot Kingsbury Welling, who died in 1794 at the age of 3 months, and Henry Welling, who died in 1794 at the age of 3 years. This monument is notable for its early use of sandstone, as most monuments from this period were typically made of limestone until the early 19th century.
