Description
The boundary wall located south of the Church of St Mary in Tewkesbury is a Grade II listed structure. This length of wall is undated but incorporates fragments from the medieval period. It is constructed from coursed limestone and lias and varies in height from approximately 1.5 meters to 2.5 meters. The wall features rough stone-on-edge copings, although some areas are overgrown as of November 1991. The total length of the wall is about 75 meters, and it runs parallel to and approximately 10 meters south of the south wall of the Abbey's south aisle.
At the southwest corner of the Abbey, the wall turns and connects to an archway with a gate that leads to Abbey House. At the eastern end, the wall curves away towards the south near the southwest corner of the transept and is stopped to the south boundary fence of the Abbey. While the wall likely does not follow a historically significant line due to the former monastic buildings that once occupied the area, it contains various medieval fragments that should be preserved.
