Description
These boundary walls and a gateway date primarily to the late 17th century, with rebuilding occurring in the 18th and 20th centuries. The walls are constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and enclose a small courtyard to the north side of the Tudor Hotel.
The section of wall along High Street is built in stretcher bond brickwork with flush stone quoins and rises to approximately 2.5 metres in height, standing slightly forward of the Hotel's front facade. It features a raised attic course in ashlar with a thin cornice supported by two consoles, topped with a blocking course carrying three stone balls on pinnacles. An arched opening, with a central key stone, is flanked by stone responds with caps. Modern wooden gates, marked with the dates 1540 and 1932 (representing the restoration date), are set within this opening.
The longer return wall along Red Lane is constructed in English bond brickwork, likely from the early 18th century, and reaches a maximum height of approximately 3 metres. It has a weathered and oversailing brick coping. A plank door adjoins the gable of the service block, and an earlier opening, now blocked, is located to its left. A base course of single, large stones runs along most of this length. A 1947 photograph in the National Monuments Record shows the gateway set within a fully ashlar-walled section along High Street, with weathered stonework to the archway and overgrowth along the wall top.
