Description

PAINSWICK NEW STREET SO 8609 (part) (south east side)

9/240 Baker monument in the churchyard c.22 m west of west tower to the Church of St Mary

GV II

Chest tomb, probably of c17, but now with two brass plates to Richard Baker 1820, and William Baker, 1836. Thick limestone top to cyma edge, carrying the brass plates; plain chest without modelling or lettering, all on heavy, broad, cyma base. The top plate is signed 'J Hamlett fecit'. Although now with C19 inscription, the heavy top and base slabs and plain chest presuppose a much earlier date: the superimpostion of the plates also supports this. The two Bakers were aged 69 and 84 respectively: many dated monuments in this church- yard show similar longevity. Just to south of principal path.
