Description
The Baker Monument is a chest tomb located approximately 22 meters west of the west tower of the Church of St Mary, likely dating from the 17th century. It features a thick limestone top with a cyma edge that supports two brass plates commemorating Richard Baker, who died in 1820, and William Baker, who died in 1836. The tomb has a plain chest without any modeling or lettering, resting on a heavy, broad, cyma base. The top brass plate is signed by 'J Hamlett fecit'. Despite the 19th-century inscriptions, the substantial top and base slabs, along with the plain chest, suggest an earlier origin for the monument. The two Bakers lived to the ages of 69 and 84, respectively, which is consistent with other dated monuments in the churchyard that reflect similar longevity. The monument is situated just south of the main path.
