Description

West Grange is a house built in 1866 by architect Benjamin Bucknell. It is constructed of limestone ashlar with a tiled roof and features grouped ashlar chimney stacks. The building has a double-depth plan that includes a rear stair hall and additional wings primarily for services. Designed in an asymmetrical Gothic Revival style, it stands two storeys high with attics.

The garden front is symmetrical with a three-window range, highlighted by a gabled and slightly projecting central bay. The windows are stone-mullioned and transomed, featuring two lights over three lights in the outer bays, and a two-light attic window above a four-light and six-light window in the centre. Other elevations display similar window styles but are arranged asymmetrically, including a hipped stair tower and service wings of one and two storeys. The date and name of the house are carved in relief above a chamfered segmental-arched doorway leading to an inner porch on the right.

Inside, original features include panelled doors, moulded architraves, moulded cornicing, carved stone fireplaces, and ribbed ceilings in the porch, stair hall, and two front rooms. The large stair hall has a Minton tile floor and an open-well stair with chamfered balusters and quatrefoils on the string.
