Description
The Lander Monument is a pedestal tomb located approximately 16 meters north-west of the north-west corner of the tower in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. It dates from the mid-18th century and is made of limestone. The tomb has an oblong plan with inset corners and features a flat top with a moulded edge that includes egg and dart decoration. There is a very high relief panel on the west side, which is much worn, and a rectangular panel on the east side. The south side displays a cartouche, while the north side has a horizontal ellipse. The monument sits on a moulded base and a flat sub-base. According to a survey from 1879, it commemorates George Lander, who was a mercer and died in 1762. Some repairs were made in the 20th century. Ellis Marsland noted that this monument was designed by John Bryan, who is also associated with the Bryan monument.
