Description

The two Carter monuments are located immediately east of the chancel in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary. The chest tomb, dedicated to William Carter and dating from 174-, is situated to the north. It is made of limestone and features a flat top, a moulded plinth, and capping, all set on a base formed by three headstones. The tomb is adorned with gadrooned quarter balusters that have bellied cartouche ends, along with large bellied cartouches on the side panels.

To the south is the pedestal tomb for Ann Carter, who died in 1815, constructed from Forest limestone. This tomb has a curved pyramidal cap topped with a faceted finial that has incised edges on a plain top. It stands on a tall moulded plinth with a base that features indented corners, a thin fluted frieze with central rosettes, and slightly raised panels on all sides. The east and west sides display ovals in low relief, while the north and south sides are shaped like headstones.
