Description
The Fretherne War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with two additional names added after the Second World War. It is made of stone and stands approximately 4 meters high. The memorial features a Latin cross on a collared shaft that rises from a square plinth, which is set on a three-stepped base. The bottom step is deep and has a low step on its north side. The cross shaft is adorned with carved flowers along the chamfered edges.
On the north face of the plinth, the names of six men from the parish who died in the First World War are listed. The east face bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF FRETHERNE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING & COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR A.D. 1914-1919." The south face states: "25 MEN OF FRETHERNE SERVED IN THE GREAT WAR," while the west face reads: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS ST JOHN XV 13." The names of two men who fell in the Second World War are incised into the north and east faces of the top step of the base.
