Description
The Joseph Cooke monument is a sarcophagus located in the churchyard approximately 27 meters southwest of the west tower of the Church of St Mary. Erected in 1828, it is made of sandstone and limestone. The monument features a steeply hipped top adorned with bold inscriptions, resting on a chest with battered sides that sits on a cyma base. This is all placed on a stone platform bordered by a weathered curb, which was formerly enclosed by railings. The sandstone cap displays a palmette cyma frieze, while the chest is crafted from limestone on a sandstone base. Joseph Cooke was 77 years old at the time of his death. This late monument is notable for its unusual form within this churchyard and is in good condition.
