Description
The monument to Richard Ockold is a chest tomb located in the churchyard approximately 3 meters south of the south aisle of the Church of St. Leonard. It dates from 1689 and is made of limestone. The tomb features lyre ends with oval end panels and moulded recessed side panels that are flanked by scrolls. It has a complex moulded top and base. The south side is inscribed with the name Richard Ockold, who died in 1689. This monument is very well preserved and showcases an elegant design and execution for its time. It should not be confused with another monument to Richard Ockold located 1.5 meters to the south. The designs of the two Ockold monuments illustrate the transition from Jacobean to provincial Baroque chest tomb design.
