Description
Bannut Tree Chapel, traditionally a Chapel of Ease to Avening since at least the 18th century, is a medieval building, possibly from the 14th century, that has undergone alterations and conversions, including being used as a stable in the late 18th century and as a dwelling in the later 19th century. The chapel is one and a half storeys tall, constructed of rubble with a Cotswold stone roof. The west gable end features an arched doorway and an early 14th-century cusped piscina window, along with a small window in the gable. The south side includes a window with a cusped head to the left and a two-light window with cusped ogee heads and a flat lintel in a chamfered surround beneath a cornice. There is a gabled dormer above and a lean-to structure to the north. A modern one and a half storey extension has been added to the south, featuring a gabled dormer over the door and one window. The 14th-century tracery is believed to have originated from Horsley church.
Inside, the central truss is substantial with slightly curving bases onto the tie, representing an upper cruck. There is an aumbry at the south-east end with a carved oak door in a Jacobean style. The fireplace is wooden, adorned with carved animals in relief, possibly dating from the early 16th century and originally intended for another purpose. The chapel also contains some imported 15th-century and later stained glass, particularly in the window heads, and decorative shell and tile ornamental window jambs in the south-west corner.
