Description
The Fountain is a Grade II listed hexagonal drinking fountain dated 1862, located on Fountain Street. It features a crocketted spirelet topped with a poppyhead and has cusped arches with triangular heads on each face. The fountain is supported by pink granite columns with carved foliate capitals. Three of its faces are blind and display inscriptions, including a memorial text that honors William Smith Esquire of the village, who passed away suddenly on September 29, 1861, at the age of 53. The text describes him as "an honest lawyer" and notes that the fountain was erected in his memory by those who admired his character. The fountain was previously moved to Old Market but has now been returned to its original location.
