Description

Grey Cot is a detached house, originally two houses, dating to the late 17th century, with significant rebuilding to the front in the late 18th century and a rear wing enlargement during the same period. It is constructed of random rubble limestone with ashlar chimneys and a concrete tile roof. The house is two storeys with an attic, and the rear wing forms an L-shaped plan. The west front has a three-window arrangement, with all windows being two-light, chamfered mullioned leaded iron casements. A four-panel door is located to the right of centre, with a flat stone porch hood supported by shaped brackets. The upper floor appears to be in later masonry, likely added during the late 18th century. The south side shows the front of the earlier house forming a wing to the right, with two-light chamfered mullioned casements on both the ground and upper floors, and a single-light window to the attic. A large segmental arch is present at the gable end of the front range, now housing a casement window and a plank door below. The north end features a two-light attic casement with lead-latticing, and a catslide roof extends to a north-side outshut on the rear wing. Internally, a mullioned window, originally from the west end of the earlier part of the house, is visible. There are two spiral staircases situated adjacent to fireplaces. A piece of early glass bears the inscription "Est une folie, toute ma vie - Graham," referencing early occupation by Huguenot weavers. Grey Cot forms part of a group with Halstead, France Cottage, and numbers 1 and 2 Cotswold Place.
