Description
Merlins Mill is a former mill that has been converted into a detached house. It dates from the late 17th century and was enlarged or rebuilt in the early 19th century. The building features coursed rubble and square, dressed limestone, with ashlar chimneys and a Welsh slate roof. It is four storeys tall, with a three-storey section at the east end.
On the south side, the oldest part on the right has a single-window arrangement, with a keyed segmental arched casement on the ground floor and a three-light window with a hoodmould on the middle and upper floors. The higher main part of the mill to the left has a mix of window styles, primarily featuring two-light chamfered mullioned casements. The building has low, small gable end chimneys with plain caps.
The north side mostly has 20th-century casements fitted into the original mill window openings, some of which are segmental arched. There is an attached wing on the north side of the earlier part that runs alongside the road. The interior has not been inspected. The mill was recorded as a corn mill from 1820 when it was known as Toadsmoor Lower Mill.
