Description
Poor Souls' Light is a late 13th century limestone structure located in the churchyard approximately 12 meters southwest of the Church of All Saints in Bisley Village. The monument features a hexagonal lower part set on a circular base, with each face displaying a trefoil-headed arcade bay. Attached corner shafts have moulded capitals adorned with delicately carved banding. The structure is topped with a hexagonal spire, which has lucarnes at the base of each face that include weathered cusped openings. Most of the original roll mouldings on the spire are missing. A small Celtic cross, added in the 19th century, sits atop the spire. Historically, the space under the spire was used for candles during masses said for the poor. This monument is noted to be the only external example of its type in the country.
